This is a great package to add your expedition or field trip far from civilisation.  Designed to last for 24hr for 1 person. Its a UK specification 24 hour combat operational ration pack (ORP). Special 2 bundle deal.

The right food can be crucial whether in combat or civlian outdoor treks. Its always advisable to pack some food especially high energy ones when heading out on trips even if you are planning a short trip.

There are numerous benefits to bring your own food with you. This is especially the case if you have specific dietary requirements. You know what's in the food and how it was prepared.

However, the downsides are that such foods may not be long lasting or maybe not be suitable when it comes to tough challenging environments.

The military know this extremely well and hence they spend millions each year to research and develop and ready packed meals for their forces. These are term meals ready to eat (MRE).  They are packed securely and designed to last long periods but subject to suitable storage conditions.

The key benefits of MRE's are :-

  • Do not spill
  • Easy to pack into your gear
  • Don't spoil easily
  • Don't (depending on type) need to be heated on stove
  • Come in durable and secure packaging
  • MRE's often come with self heating system
  • Balanced diet

Thus you don't need a fire or stove to cook the meal and therefore can be quickly eaten. No need hunt around for suitable materials for a fire.

For civilian use, MRE's are best for emergency  use, short durations or wherever you need ready to eat meals without any preparation (cooking). For maximum storage life it is best to store them in cool location  or chilled environments. Hot or high temperature environments e.g. storing in car boot can shorten shelf life greatly.

Eating MRE's for long periods is not really recommended.
